went in to-day with a friend for lunch after a client meeting. The service was warm and sweet as it usually is, though we were encouraged to sit at a different table than the one we had picked out. In retrospect, I think they might keep that one for regulars or friends of the family.
At high noon, the place was deserted. By the time we left, one regular had come and gone, and two more tables had arrived, but the place was pretty quiet. Good for us, not so much for the house. We were permitted to order from the dinner menu, which is more interesting to me than the lunch menu, which is mostly burgers (and of course, the Iranian Chicken Sandwich...), though I'd imagine they are pretty good burgers.
I had the smothered chicken, white meat, with hush puppies and mac & cheese, my friend had the smothered roast beef with collard greens and white rice with gravy. This was after ordering the rib tips and our server reporting back in a moment (with much apology) that the rib tips were not available.
The server was kind enough to bring us little shooters of iced tea, to see if we liked it before ordering. It was not traditional southern sweetened iced tea, but it was very good.
My chicken was hopping from the bone into delicious gravy, with the mac and cheese stoutly (though creamily) cheering it on from the side. The hush puppies were crispy on the outside, moist, hot and deliciously spiced inside.
My friend gave me some of her beef, and it seemed like the beef's gravy was a wee bit tastier than my chicken's gravy (though they were both a veerry nice brown pan gravy). She wouldn't let me near the collard greens, but I've had them before.
feeling expansive, we let the server upsell us a very nice peach cobbler with a little shot of what seemed like canned whipped cream.
All in all, another fabulous meal, reasonably priced. The new top price is 15.95 for pork chitterlings, every other dinner entree is around $10 (Rib tips $12.95)
this joint deserves more 'hound business, so I thought I'd post this and bump them up the thread a tad. They are at the NE corner of University and Dale, 609 University. Closed Mondays. Breakfast, too, 7:30AM
