Sweet and Sour Walnuts

I would like to make a dish I remember having at a Vegetarian Chinese restaurant. It was battered and fried walnuts in a sweet sour sauce. I know how to make the sauce but I wonder what type of batter or coating should cover the nuts. I remember it was very light, not thick and cakey or eggy. Does anyone have a suggestion... maybe just flour or cornstarch and water?
