Sweet, Merciful God, was Rockfish Grill Awful.

Although it's a chain (it's at Southpoint Mall in Durham so it must be a chain, right?), we tried Rockfish Grill last night to see if it was anything close to a decent oyster bar/seafood restaurant.

Best description of the food overall would be inedibly salty.

My husband had a half dozen oysters at the bar and said they were very good (and the price was reasonable - $6 for a half dozen). We ordered the fried calamari (I had experienced their version of the jalapeno popper the previous Sunday with another friend who had wanted to try it - lowdown on the poppers is this: picture a shrimp jammed into an overly cheesy jalapeno with bacon. there's too much going on there. Also, I had the fish tacos that day, hoping for a grilled fish taco similar to Babette's but with more fish - not so! Greasy, battered/fried fish with cheese, a cream based ancho chili sauce, no veggies at all, and a side of mexirice right out of the box).

Back to last night.

So we ordered the calamari which was fresh from the freezer and deep fried as expected. Not bad but nothing to write home about. Pulcinella's does a better job of that by far.

For dinners, I ordered the grilled scallops with veggies and a side salad (Which cost $1 more than the comes-with mexi rice in a box). The scallops were well cooked but just average sized scallops, and there were about 7 on the plate, which was fine. However they were sitting in the salty marinade/broth. They were quite salty, and to get an idea of how salty they were, well, I love country ham and they were almost too salty for me.

My husband ordered the grilled shrimp po-boy which came with waffle fries and cider slaw. The fries were good but I could get them at Chick Fila.

The shrimp po-boy was so salty that we didn't eat it. We asked if that is how they regularly prepare the grilled food and they said yes.

For a seafood restaurant, I have never seen a place that cooked it worse.

Avoid this dump at all costs and with any luck it will close down and be replaced by something better.
