Swarna - Indian Buffet in Walnut Creek

Kathleen Mikulis | Jul 14, 200305:50 PM

After seeing some positive words on Chowhound about Swarna Indian Cuisine in Walnut Creek, my boyfriend and I decided to go check out their buffet Saturday for lunch.

1690 Locust St. (near Civic Drive)
Walnut Creek, CA

The price was $6.99 each - the typical Indian buffet fare (I believe Priya is the only one that charges $7.99) - plus it included a free soft drink. Score!

However, the food left something to be desired. The first couple of bites of the chicken makhni were quite good. But then both my boyfriend and I took bites that included something like bone, leading us to spit the bites into our napkins. Having to spit out food always brings a dish down a few notches in my opinion. The sauce on the chicken makhni, however, was excellent and I even brought back a small bowl full of it back to the table for naan dipping.

The spinach pakora was cold and not crisp. The naan was hot and wheatier than most versions, and the kheer was thicker than most versions. Wheatier naan and thicker kheer don’t mean that it was worse/better than other places – just a difference I noted.

Here’s the list of dishes served (many vegetarian):
--rice (regular) & lemon rice
--chicken makhi
--eggplant curry
--(something) cauliflower
--lamb kofta
--chicken curry
--lettuce (wilted)/tomatoes (very red)/cucumbers/melon/oranges
--raita (inimpressive)
--spinach pakora
--aloo saag

Despite the free drink, I would say Swarna is the worst of the Indian buffets I’ve tried in the East Bay (my boyfriend gave it second worst honors). The best? Still Priya in Berkeley. I’ve included the link to previous discussions on it below.
