Avoiding snowy Highway 17 on Friday, we detoured through Half Moon Bay and continued down the coast on highway 1. We stopped off at the Swanton Berry Farm stand, just north of Davenport. It's an organic farm that sells locally. We tried blackberry jam and strawberry jam (which was selling for $5 or $7 a bottle). They now have sweet early strawberries (with slightly white shoulders) for sale.
We also sampled their baked goods. I had one of the best scones I've had in a while, an enormous, rich, buttery pecan scone with jam - tasting of pecans and brown sugar. The topping of blackberry jam only enhanced its deliciousness. We also tried fresh strawberry cheesecake which was delicious and creamy. I also had a chocolate (Scharffen Berger) dipped strawberry. We bought a basket of strawberries and ate them for breakfast the next morning.
We did not sample the artichoke soup, giant strawberry biscotti, strawberry lemonade, or the blackberry cobbler, though they all looked great.
A very nice woman was working there making jam, but came out to see if we had any questions.
I'm looking forward to going back later in the season and picking strawberries. I really loved how it is not a chain and all overly-packaged, but rather a great chow-ish place.
I should mention that we liked so much, we stopped by again on our way home to buy more scones and strawberries. Sadly, only the strawberries are left now.
