Sure it's at the most pretentious of intersections - North/Damen/Milwaukee - but I was happy to find this example of unrefined americana on the menu when I went out for dogs this Saturday.
I wasnt surprised what goes into one of these - its just a Twinkie dipped in pancake batter, deep fried, sprinkled with powdered sugar and served on a stick. I was surprised at the delicacy and muted sweetness of the finished product.
I was afraid the creme filling would come shooting out in a lethal stream, a la jalapeno poppers. However, it just melted into icing that seeped into the cake part, making it very moist and much more complex-tasting than a Twinkie right out of the box. Who knew deep frying could improve on perfection?
I asked about deep-fried Snickers but they looked at me weird. Guess that's still a little too Hoosier for trendy Chicagoans.
