Atkins fans beware: Sugar sugar sugar sugar!
I was shopping for chili ingredients at Shop N Save at Golf Mill in Niles. They've got a pretty ordinary small supermarket going in 2/3 of their space, and an outstanding multi-ethnic area in the other third, including Indian, Mexican, Greek, Asian (pretty well mixed), Polish/Eastern Europe, Italian and probably a couple I'm forgetting.
Wandering down the Indian aisle, I had a Homer Simpson moment: "Mmmmm... shelf-stable gulabjamun... aaaahhhhh"
It's a 1kg box about 10cm square (metric standards!), enclosing a can with a pull-tab lid and a plastic lid for (hah!) leftovers. It has 10, 100g servings of 317 calories each (28.8 from fat), and the ingredients are only sugar, flour, milk constituents and cardamom. One serving is two balls of cheesy dumpling with ample amounts of syrup.
The stuff's wonderful! Sweet silkiness. A quick warming in the microwave, and it's a short sweet vacation in Nirvana. It's quite a bit softer than the stuff I get in restaurants, but still excellent and sweet. A nice aroma of cardamom perfumes the whole thing. And sweet!!!
