A neighbor asked if I've tried a certain butcher shop on 48th St. which supposedly sells grass fed beef. I've never noticed one but drove around this morning and sure enough, there's a stand alone store just north of McDowell.
The odd thing is that is wasn't open. In fact, there's a sign out fron that says they are only open on Thursdays from 3-7 p.m. - so I'm not quite sure if they are more of a distribution place rather than a stocked store.
They appear in a list of butchers in an AZ Rep article, but that's about it in terms of news coverage:

Quite the mystery!
I've always wondered about that place; I've been by probably a dozen times over the past year and never once seen it open.
Are you going tomorrow to check it out?? :)
PHX Metropolitan - does that mean it's closed?
A few years ago my dad was visiting from out of town and we went to a place called Wineburgers around the 16th St. & Bethany Home area. They had very good burgers, and they told us they got a hamburger meat mix from SW Meat. My dad and I picked some up and my dad was able to make a very good replica of the burger we had from WB (basically cook the burger on the grill and keep pouring wine over it as you cook it...mmmmm). I keep meaning to go back, but I usually do "specialty shopping" on Saturdays and SW Meat was not open then. Bummer to hear they might be out of business.
Hobe Meats is very good though (also 16th St. & Bethany Home...Dad & I were going there when we stumbled on Wineburgers :). If you like beef jerky and can score some at Hobe, do it. It's worth it.
I had my girlfriend stop by this place today since I knew I couldn't make the hours...
She said that the butcher counter was empty inside the store, and about 5 vendors were outside selling tacos and other various items.
So I guess now we know...
I stopped by earlier as well. The space WAS a butcher shop, now vacant.
The 3-7 p.m. event on Thursdays is kind of a fledgling farmer's market with some vendors inside, others out front under portable canopies. The vendors consisted of:
- the tamale/mex food vendor who is a regular at the downtown PHX Sat. market.
- a hot dog cart
- a purveyor of hot sauce
- a kind gent selling little baggies of baklava (and something else that looked like noodles)
There were also a couple of artists, someone selling stationary type stuff and a lady hawking lotions and other personal care items.
A bit of a bummer that the butcher seems to have faded away. I hope the young market finds success, though right now it's pretty small.
Oh! This is somewhat exciting, although sad that the butcher shop is closed.
I loooovvveee those wineburgers, I used to order from there in high school when I worked at a car dealership on Camelback.
I work nearby, so I'll try to stop by and support the very fledgling market. Jon, is it worth the trip at all? I do love hot sauce?
I used to work at 48th Street and Washington and I passed by that store nearly every day. (This was at least 3 or so years ago, by the way.) One day I went in and they had a pretty basic selection of sandwiches but they were fantastic. Ambiance was of a butcher shop, nothing more.
Sadly, places like Coscto and AJ's, as well as the grocery stores, give small businesses like SW Meat pretty hard competition. The owner of SW, David Hart, has closed the butcher shop for now (I believe it closed in the fall of 2006), but he is still hoping to open a farmer's market there, but is running into obstacles. It was open for several months this summer, but if currently not open. If you are interested in a farmer's market in the area, especially if you are interested in being a part of it, or if you have any general support, I'm sure the owner would love to hear from you. I believe the phone number for the shop (602-275-2000) is still valid. The butcher shop has been in my family for years, and I'm hoping it will turn into something new that the community will enjoy, and I know David Hart would appreciate any community support you will give him. : )
