I'm posting this review because I saw a comment on this board that suggested that Susur Lee's restaurant, Susur, was not great. I happened to eat there last week and that is definitely not true. Also, while I have heard that the wait staff can be unfriendly, that was not our experience. In fact, my only complaint was that there was too much food. The food, ambience, and entire experience were of the highest quality.
There were four of us and we each had the 7-course tasting menu. We asked the wine waiter to bring us a selection of wines to match the food. It wasn't cheap... $110 for the food and we specified a price of about $70 each for the wine. However, as I said, there was way too much food. Next time I'll go for the 5-course menu ($90) or maybe even the vegetarian tasting menu, which I think goes down to $55.
It was a real foodie delight. Each plate had several things, and they brought different plates for each pair of people, so there was lots of opportunity to taste. Over several hours, we tasted several renditions of goose liver, lobster, scallops, stuffed pigeon legs, duck breast, lots of meats, several types of mushrooms, several applications of truffle, all kinds of interesting vegetables... it went on and on, topped off by plates with several desserts each. All of it was extremely good. I wouldn't go for a big blowout meal like that very often, but I don't begrudge a penny, and I'd argue that it's the best food in Toronto.
