Sushi in Temecula

Jim Taggert | Jan 9, 200612:31 AM

While visiting relatives in Temecula, I stumbled across Akamoo's Island Sushi. Finding little in the way of suggestions for Temecula online, and no good recs from the family, I did what is usually unthinkable and opened the phone book to find our dining spot for the evening.

Walking in to the restaurant you are greeted by the owner, and sushi chef, Akamoo. Akamoo directed us to a spot at the sushi bar and started asking us what type of fish we liked. Akamoo explained that there is no menu, but if you tell him what kind of fish you like, he will feed you. If you do not like what he gives you, you do not have to pay for it.

Akamoo is constantly talking to you, and the other customers, and making sushi. Akamoo expalined that he was half Hawaiian and half Japanese and he had trained as a sushi chef in Japan. He started us off with some simple sushi- bluefin tuna, salmon, and snappper. He then made us a salmon "carpaccio". The salmon was fanned out on a plate, sprinkled with soy sauce, some capers and some type of sprout. Next came a Sexy Cajun roll and then tuna poki.

We gladly paid for everything that was put in front of us. A very enjoyable experience.
