I had a sushi craving last night and went to U-Zen for the first time. The fish we ordered from their specials board (bluefin and red snapper) were just wonderful. Also, I tend not to like cucumber rolls cut into matchsticks - not enough crunch that way, but U-Zen's were crispy and flavorful (as flavorful as cucumber ever is). The special rolls we ordered were unweildy in the extreme (how do people eat those monster rolls). The koji roll, for example, had great tuna on the outside and plentiful roe and avocado and more inside, but I could not get all those flavors working at once.
Anyway, while U-Zen and Sushi Tenn and Hide all have their charms for me, I was wondering whether people liked any of the Sushi places in Santa Monica that I never read about on Chowhound. I really didn't like Sushi King, but I have never been to Mon Sushi, Hakata or Noma, all on Wilshire. There are also Taka and Sushi Roku closer to the beach. And now Fukui in the old Thomas Coffee Shop space on Lincoln.
Any opinions on any of these places? Or should I just save myself from bad flavors and head to West LA everytime.
