Sushi rolls and soy sauce

I know it is bad form to put the rice side of a piece of nigiri sushi in the soy sauce. It also spoils the sushi, making it overwhelmingly soy-flavored.

But what about rolls and hand rolls? How does one get the right amount of soy sauce? Or is one not supposed to use soy sauce on rolls?
