About a year ago, I was eating at Jewel Bako with a friend. We fell into conversation with the pair seated next to us, a father and daughter. They were clearly sushi hawks, and it was fun to talk to them. The daughter was saying that the fish from some of the best restaurants all comes from the same place (she named three restaurants, the only one I can remember is Sushi Yasuda), and knew a lot of other New York sushi fun facts.
Then she said, "But the best sushi in New York isn't at any of these expensive restaurants, it's at a take-out place on 81st and Madison."
She was so specific about it that I didn't think to check the address with her or ask for the name. The next time I found myself in that neighborhood, a month after the conversation, I looked around.
THERE IS NOTHING THAT EVEN SLIGHTLY RESEMBLES A TAKE-OUT SUSHI PLACE ON THAT BLOCK OR NEAR THERE.
Help me! Can anyone imagine what this woman was talking about? I am tormented.
