Took a friend (who's partial to En Sushi) to Z Sushi in Alhambra yesterday, sat at the sushi bar and had a wonderful lunch.
We were not terribly hungry so didn't eat a great deal, but what we had was simply among the best sushi I have had in Los Angeles (and I've been to Gen, R-23, Sushi Tenn, Kiriko and Beacon all within the last several months). The setting is very nice ("oh, it's fancy," my friend remarked as we seated ourselves).
We started with albacore and yellowtail sushi -- both were fairly large pieces, the albacore lightly drizzled with some scallion. The hamachi was a revelation -- buttery, succulent, the best in a very long time. We also ordered the salmon carpaccio which was a fairly large plate of very thinly sliced raw salmon, topped with a bit of avocado and thinly sliced cucumbers, and drizzled with a fabulous coulis of olive oil, garlic and fresh basil. Wow.
Also ordered yellowtail and scallion cut roll wrapped in soy paper instead of seaweed, and I guess I've heard that the soy paper wrap is "trendy," but I have to say, the way that yellowtail was tasting yesterday, the soy paper wrap really emphasized the buttery flavor of the fish and enhanced it so much more than the seaweed would have.
Last dish was an order of maguro, again, large, thick, deeply reddish hunks of tuna that was a perfect ending.
Like I said, we didn't eat all that much, the bill (with diet coke and an ice tea) came to $34 before tip.
OK the best part was that after the meal, my friend said, "well, after having come here and Sushi Gen, I'm beginning to revise my opinion about En Sushi."
