For me, the scariest restaurant in New York was faux Dunkin Donuts on 7th Ave near 14th St in Chelsea called, for a while, Dunkin Cafe right after losing its DD franchise, and later Donut Cafe, still using those pink and purple colors. Well, like every doughnut shop, they do the bulk of their business in the morning. But instead of adding, say, ice cream or sandwiches like many NYC doughnut places do, these guys added a SUSHI COUNTER!!!! They put as sign up in the window that said "Sushi Dream". Eeeeewwww. I always envisioned a piece of raw tuna, sugar-glazed and tucked into a yeasty donut. Or perhaps sprinkled with toasted coconut...They lasted just several months, and the space is -- like everything else will become -- a cell phone store.
Well, the dream is BACK! Last week I spotted a Twin Donuts on 14th St. just east of 6th Ave. that, indeed, has added sushi to its offerings of Blimpie sub sandwiches and Ice cream. This is really just too disgusting for me to envision who would want to buy sushi, or, in turn, would want to buy doughnuts. Far worse than the Chinese restaurants that add a sushi bar. I wouldn't trust either side of the menu.
But perhaps I should get a chocolate iced with salmon roe sprinkled on it....Is this sushi doughnut combo available elsewhere in town??? And are there places with similarly distressing combinations???
