Surviving Utah: Meatless Friday Dinner at Shabu in Park City

Sitting in the couch still recovering from the grease coma I just put myself in from Breakfast at Chicks, feeling ever so guilty for eating that whole sausage patty, SO walked by with a guilty look on his face and muttered, “I forgot… you know it was Friday…”

“Her-UmpH!” I responded not needing yet another thing to feel guilt about, “Well we are on vacation, so Lenten obligations don’t count…” too late though, I felt guilty…

So, I decided my penance would be taking possibly the biggest culinary risk I had this whole trip… Going for Sushi… Sushi in a state 700 miles from the nearest Ocean… if I had truly angered my lord, he would prove it to me that night…

Based on the solid recommendation of our Host, we ended up at a trendy spot called Shabu in Park City, otherwise known to me as Los Angeles, Utah. It’s located on the second story of a mall type complex on the upper end of Main St. And even though it was off season, the place was absolutely buzzing with beautiful people… yup, L.A. alright…

Nevertheless, we enjoyed the humm and our server was very nice and so we ordered…

Potstickers: First absolutely safe choice. And nothing really special… Pass…

Tuna Poke: I love this Hawaiian Ceviche and this was the first test of how fresh their fish was… and it was excellent… being cautious we decided not to order the Sashimi, but after trying this, I kinda felt bad we didn’t.

Firecracker Rock Shrimp: Tempura fried and very tasty…again, shrimp exceeded my expectations… So I began to settle in really nice as the rolls started coming out..

Spider Roll: Even our hosts were a little antsy about the Sushi previously only trying their California Roll… this was their first experience with the Spider and it was EXCELLENT. Large size too…

Centerpede Roll: As big as the Spider Roll and tasted even better with meaty tempura shrimp inside. Again, we had just ordered these two rolls to play it safe. I was sad we didn’t order more.

Pineapple Fried Rice: Came out in the Tinniest most stuffed little bowl I’ve ever seen… nothing really special about it either. Pass this one too…

Sesame Fried Green Beans: I love these type of beans… where the Rice was a disappointment, the green beans were a hit!

Vegetable/Seafood Tempura: I loved both of these, the selection of veggies were EXCELLENT. Asparagus, Japanese Squash. The Seafood was just as good in variety, Scallops, Salmon and crab claws! The large portions aren’t crazy huge, but still a good size to share…

Miso Soup: SO ordered this because he loves soup and said, it wasn’t anything special. So pass again.

Their selection of Sake and Sake based drinks were also wonderful! We closed dinner with some great after dinner drinks, Hot Toddy, Spiked Green Tea, Ice Wine as well as Tempura Ice Cream (Always a fave!).

We woke up the next morning, our final day in Utah feeling just fine… I had survived, no broken bones, pretty good chow and no food poisoning! I guess all those times being nice to puppies and old ladies did count with the big guy… And so on our last day in town, we had only one last chow adventure to have… and that was the big one for both of us… Fry Sauce…
