Survival mode: going to get soup at Lelli's (DTW)

It's funny how protective I get about what I think is such an exclusively great idea that I'm the only person who could possibly have had it.

Today I was thinking that I needed some "hunker down" food for the next day or so, and I've been meaning to buy myself a quart of Lelli's (Auburn Hills) *amazing* minestrone soup to-go sometime. It ain't cheap, at about $11 bucks a quart, but it's honestly worth it. I think it is, anyway.

So around about 7PM I get to thinking that I should call them to see how long they're *actually* going to be open tonight because...well, you folks know why. Practically no independent business is staying open until their posted hours today, yesterday, or probably tomorrow, either. "Too much snow" plus "far too cold" equals "much earlier goodbye". As I talked to the gentleman who answered their phone, he said they'd be open until 8PM, or *maybe* 9PM, but honestly: we both knew it was going to be 8PM.

Got the car cleaned off and warmed up, and off I went. Here I am, supporting my local independent restaurant even in the depths of horrible winter. I was practically breaking my own arm patting myself on the back for doing so.

When I get there, what's the first question I'm asked? "Are you here for soup?" I laughed. "Of course; how many times have you done this today?" As much as I wanted this idea to be my own, as much as I wanted to be full of myself for having such a great idea...let's just say that it's nothing new to them, and they had plenty on hand for me. And yes, it's just as good as it always is, even when it's not served by a waiter in jacket and tie.

Just for a moment, I had the brief notion of acting like someone who was coming in for a full two-hour, six-course meal...but I just didn't have the heart to even joke with them about it. It was clear that they were just ready to go home and battle the elements for themselves, and I still had to get gas and go to Kroger for ice cream. And yes: you read that right.

I wonder if the weather will let up enough for some good eating tomorrow, too.
