Surprisingly awesome BBQ at Smoke Daddy

Susan | May 15, 2006 01:22 PM

I was pleasantly SHOCKED by how good the BBQ meal was at Smoke Daddy yesterday. Take-out from Smoke Daddy (on Division in Wicker Park) was once reliable but had slipped in the past year or so. I mean, it had gotten really bad - fatty and chewy meat, lackluster tasting sides, etc. I had all but given up on the place. (We had begun alternating between Honey 1 and Twin Anchors when in dire need of BBQ, but neither had the right combination of great meat and sides.) I'm happy to report that my neighborhood 'cue joint has returned to its previous deliciousness.

First, the MEAT: Our takeout order included several combo sandwiches (we all agreed that the pulled pork/pulled chicken combo was awesome, especially with a side of blue cheese crumbles added on top of the spicy sauce and under the toasted bun); pork, beef and chicken were all yummy. The order of Combo Ribs was good (especially the baby backs) but the surprise winner of the day were the succulent Rib Tips: all meat, little fat, and smokey good!

Next, the SIDES: We had regular and sweet potato fries, which were OK. The saucy, meat laden baked beans were fantastic. The smoked sweet potato was great - adults and kids fought over the last few bits. The green beans covered with a bacon-onion topping were delicious and the healthiest of all the sides. And the really great surprise was the cole slaw; spicy, slightly sweet dressing with a hint of cilantro on really fresh, almost crisp shreds of colored cabbage.

If you had given up on Smoke Daddy as we had, I encourage you to try it again. No idea if they have changed management or we just encountered a day when the BBQ gods were smiling on us, but I can't wait to order from there again!
