Super Supermarket Food Find

Big Larry | Mar 28, 200505:02 PM

This weekend I was in Little Saigon looking for something to BBQ with the traditional Easter Leg O' Lamb and boy did I find something special. I was at the Vien Dong Super Food Warehouse (I think that's what it is called...maybe) on the corner of Brookhurst and Westminster (on the same corner as Lee's sandwich shop). I'm perusing the meats and seafood and come across cryovac'd packages of Beef Spare Ribs (beef ribs that ahve been trimmed). Anyway they were $1.99 a pound and so so good. I rubbed them in spices and smoked for about 5 hours, and the end result was one of the best tasting beef ribs i've ever had. Along with the ribs I also purchased 15 humongous chicken legs at .59cents a pound that grilled up divine also. They are much meatier than the little ones you get in family packs at Ralphs, and cheaper as well. If you've never been to this place for your meat and seafood needs you need to check it. They have absolutely beautiful cuts of pork butt, shoulders, and whole legs. Gorgeous oxtails. Cheap live dungeness and lobsters. Fresh live fish (tilapia, catfish, etc). And much much more. The store definitely smells a little bit, but it's well worth the trip, and you can always get a pho on the way out of town to hold you over until the meat is finished.
