The New Super 88 is open!

galleygirl | Feb 25, 2002 12:46 PM

So, just got back from my maiden voyage to the new Super 88!! It's been open since last Tuesday, but apart from some very little signs that say "Grand Opening" in Chinese, and presumably, exciting things about free gifts, it's pretty tough to know...Only the back half of the building is open, you have to go thru the parking lot (!) to get to the entrance..The front, which will be the food court, won't open til next month.

Things weren't quite unpacked yet, but I forsee an identity crisis of major proportions...They want to be YOUR full-service grocery store; it was a little disconcerting to see the soy-bean paste next to the Ocean Spray cranberry sauce, but OK.....Whole Spanish food aisles, whole cleaning product aisles and Eggo waffles...Strange, because there's a Super Star market 2 doors away, wonder how they'll do unless they zero in on their niche market...

There was, of course, the usual fine selection of frozen dumplings, frozen seafood, dried fish and every kind of Asian ingredient you've ever dreamed of..(they had lemon leaves, but no lime..) Oh, and a butcher shop, and those cooked ducks and chickens, as well as some sweets. I bought what just became my new favorite sauce, "Chili Soy paste"..Imagine a thinned down Oyster sauce, but saltier and with KICK!!!! And they have cakes of Beluchan, the mix of chilis and Ground dried shrimp that makes Malaysian food so good! Now, I just have to figure out how to use it.

BTW< for those who care (and you know who you are,Rubee and Lindsay B), they have instant masa harina in 5 lb.bags.

The produce was looking a little anemic, it seemed like the chiller thing wasn't up to speed...It's not as produce heavy as the other Super 88's...But the fish tanks are nice and clean; I just cooked up a catfish that melted in my mouth, and was the freshest tasting I've ever had, so hopefully, things'll stay that way..They'll have to survive in a mainstream place, next door to a Star with a great fish dept...Of course, the Star rarely gets whole fish.

And hey, as I was leaving, a guy asked me how much I spent, and when I told him $27, he gave me a free 5 lb. bag of Jasmine Rice..What's not to like?
