Driving back from Long Island on Sunday, we stopped in at Seamorhen II on the 118 block of Guy Brewer Blvd. in Queens. The jerk chicken is as good as ever. I don't know why it's so hard for places in Manhattan to do a decent jerk, but Seamorhen does it so effortlessly. I suspect they brine the chicken, but the converted oil drum--used as a grill the Caribbean way--in front must have a lot to do with the incredible flavor of the chicken. Mac & Cheese side was not very good, but collards were pefect. The fried porgie was also exceptional. This place may be off-putting to some (not very hygienic, shabby neighborhood), but I love the scene in there--customers trading barbs with the cooks, Anita the proprietress working till she can't take anymore and plopping herself in front of the fan. In any event, I can't conceive of better jerk in the city.
