Well, a friend took me today to the Easter buffet brunch at "Fives"-- the restaurant in the Peninsula Hotel-- and all I can say is:
This place had to have the highest ratio of "food appearance" to "food flavor" that I've ever encountered!
Every selection (and there were many) was gorgeous, and NEARLY every selection (with the exception of an excellent yellowtail shashimi, pate and rack of lamb) was almost completely FLAVORLESS. It's not that they tasted bad; it's just that they (including most of the desserts!) quite literally tasted like NOTHING. In fact, I actually started to wonder if they were serving us the waxed display pieces from the window. (But then I realized there WAS no window.)
To top it all off, while the $55/person price was about par-for-the-course for this kind of thing, we foolishly assumed that this would include a drink. So when the waiter-- upon seating us-- asked if we'd like a mimosa, we said "sure". Then, when the check came, we saw we were charged $17 EACH for those two tiny little drinks. What a rip-off! (And having lived here for 20 years, I though I was immune to that kind of stuff!)
