Had Sunday brunch yesterday at Season's Restaurant at Highland Lake Inn in Flat Rock, NC. There have been times in the past when I thought the brunch was just OK, but yesterday was great. The stand out was swiss chard braised in apple cider vinegar and bacon. The garlicly brussel sprouts were very good. The baby greens (grown on site) are always a standout and were yesterday as well. Buttermilk dressing superb. Curried cous cous on the salad bar surprisingly good. Good bread, grits a bit of a disappointment. Pancakes w/ warm maple syrup and good bacon. The Prime Rib was nicely rare, but a little bit lacking in flavor. The desserts are always a weak point at Season's, but these were pretty good, including the creme brulee cheesecake.
Last Sunday I had brunch (not a buffet) at Saluda Grade Cafe in Saluda, N.C. I had three delicious , very thick pancakes w/ strawberries. My husband tried to order "off menu". The waiter agreed, but when the kitchen staff brought out his 2 eggs over easy (ok, ordered over easy, cooked hard) and 2 pieces of ww toast, husband was instructed not to tell anybody. So, let it be known, they don't like to cook off menu. Oh yeah, and they charged him $10 so that should help keep him from trying to get eggs for breakfast there again. This is not a slam...it was nice of them to give him what he wanted...I'm just saying ;-)
And...about 3 Sundays ago we had brunch at the newly reopened Lake Lanier Tea House. (I may not have the name exactly right) This view is spectacular. I had been to this buffet once several weeks ago, and we gave the food an official "eh", mainly enjoying the copious pancakes and bacon, but at $20...a little steep. However, on this last visit I was much more impressed. There was, in particular, a seafood salad with shrimp and mussels and fennel that was just a stand-out. Smoked salmon hor d'ouerves were nice. Tiny Pot de Creme were nice. Since it's been a few weeks, i can't remember everything we had, but we were happy....and full...and of course the view is fabulous.
Looking back at the eating I've done over the past few weeks...i see why the size 2's were problematic at the mall today.
