Suika (Watermelon)

PAO | Dec 12, 201409:00 PM     3

Kingyo (Vancouver, BC) little sister, Suika, has finally opened in Seattle. This is their soft opening week. Next week they begin daily menus (dinner only). Happy to report that this restaurant has hit the ground running. The tuna tataki appetizer was excellent--lightly seared chunks of fresh tuna, served with mayo chili sauce. The aburi saba battera is outstanding! Better than regular saba sushi! The ebi mayo was a revelation: unlike ebi fry, this shrimp was done tempura-style, and served on big dabs of yummy mayo and chili sauce. One bite, and I realized I'd never had fresher shrimp in North America. The only semi-pedestrian dish was the ramen salad--instead of refreshing, this one was rather oily--lots of flavor, but not what we were looking for. The signature desserts from Vancouver are here--a very refreshing almond tofu and the frozen matcha tiramisu. Be sure to try to homemade ginger ale (stir before drinking). This is like going to Japan without going to Japan. We'll definitely be back.
