And friend and I went had reservations at Sugiyama this past saturday - we sat at the bar and did the omakase kaiseki - we did not do the kobe beef. Let me start by saying I had never understood people who waxed and swooned about incredible Japanese until I had dinner here. The whole meal - the sitting at the bar - the theater of the chef and his assistants - the quality of the seafood - the smell of the broths - the silken quality of the fish - all the various aspects came together. My friend and I left basking in a wonderful after-glow - I truely believe high quality products can elevate one's mood, person, psyche. We ordered a moderate bottle of sake - left a 20% tip - total, including tip, came to $320. We left full and sated(?), not stuffed and bloated - we ambled all the way back to Chelsea.
