Thank you for all of your suggestions.
Our impromptu trip to New York with our kids was great. We ended up trying John's pizza for lunch one day (very nice), and loved our trek through the Lower East Side.
On the dinner front, we were hampered by very tired kids who had been walking all over Manhatten and were not up to much more by dinner. The first night we ended up at Pigalle because it was close to the hotel and the menu looked decent. It was quite a respectable, if not memorable dinner.
The second night my husband wanted something more upscale, and we ended up at Adour. The food was outstanding (the fois gras terrine wonderful, and the duck was delicious). My son, the 10 year old, loved the room and raved about his tenderloin (yes, even as a picky eater, he can tell the diference between a cheap steak and something worthwhile). My daugher enjoyed pasta with lobster made specially for her because nothing on the menu appealed to her. Desserts were lovely, but not spectacular (but I am not a big dessert person so this did not in any way spoil the evening).
The service was very attentive and special care was taken to ensure that the kids enjoyed their meal, which was particularly gratifying given that this is most certainly a more adult environment. The waiter recommeded a new grape juice for my son made from wine grapes from Nappa Valley which he quite enjoyed!
All in all, a wonderful weekend in your wonderful city!
