In late June, after 3 days in Rome, my wife and I are picking up a car first thing in the morning and staying in Assisi that night. I know that we could spend the rest of our lives exploring the area in between, but that's the plan. I'm going crazy trying to figure out what to do in between. I know that Jim Leff always recommends looking at previous posts. I did that and I now have too much to do.
We would like to visit a few Umbrian hill towns to get a feel for the area. We plan to come back and spend an extended period of time soon.
Where should we go? Should we stick to the "major" towns like Spoleto? I would prefer to go to less touristy towns, but I don't want to go far from our route. Is there any reason not to wander our way to Assisi? Will it take forever? Will we be spending too much time in the car without seeing enough?
I have read all of the posts in the archives about Umbria. That said, has anyone been anywhere recently that is a great place for lunch? We're looking for rustic, traditional, non-touristy, less than $50 total.
BTW, we are young (late 20s) and have plenty of stamina and energy.
I know that I asked lots of questions. Any and all thoughts appreciated. To email me personally, replace the first "." with a "@". Thanks.
