My sister and I are planning to take my dad to dinner for his 60th birthday in a couple of weeks. We want a nice, upscale place with great food but nothing too festive -- this is his first birthday since our mother/his wife passed away. Some other conditions: he is "kosher style," meaning he will eat anything that can be considered kosher (a steak, fish, chicken) at any restaurant kosher or not, but will not eat shellfish or pork, etc. Out of respect, my sister and I do the same when with him, so we would love to find a place where we are not kicking ourselves cuz what we really want we can't order when with him. My sister and I are more into food and dining out than he is though we have been slowly turning the tide over the past 5 years and now he is pretty game for trying anything.
In the past, upscale Italian or steakhouses have been the choice -- I just want to see if anyone has any ideas I haven't considered -- including suggestions for steak or upscale Italian. Anything below 34th Street would be better received but it really could be anywhere in Manhattan or downtown Brooklyn.
Thanks for your help!
