My favorite soup of all time is tom kha gai. You know it - a wonderous spicy sweet amalgam of chicken, coconut milk, mushrooms, lemongrass, and wonderful galanga-ness. It's the standard by which I judge Thai restaurants... except that I've found my favorite bowls of the stuff haven't been at my overall favorite Thai restaurants. You know when you've found a good bowl when you just keep drinking the broth when all the edible goodies are gone.
Other than an amazing bowl I had in Portland, my two favorite places for it are:
Cha Am in Berkeley
Dusita in Santa Clara
My third favorite is probably Nipapon in San Mateo.
I just tried Dusita's last night. Their soup was incredible. My boyfriend swears by their basil chicken. Unfortuately we ordered it with beef which was of poor quality. Chicken dishes we ordered (green bean chicken and cashew chicken) were marred by too much chile oil, which made the dish too oily.
Many entrees have humorous names like the following (among others):
Chicken Run (But not fast enough)
Dusita's Angry Pork
Salmon in Love
(and I'm very intrigued by Prawns in Cup Cake Pan)
2325 El Camino Real
Santa Clara, CA
Anyway, what are your suggestions for best tom kha gai?
