sugar syrup

I love mojitos, and now that summer seems to have finally come to the Northeast, I'd like to have some sugar syrup on hand to use when making drinks for more than 1 or 2 people. I've looked at several recipes and since each prescribes a different proportion of water to sugar (1:1, 2:1, and 3:1), I'm more than a bit confused. Hounds and bartenders: what do you recommend? TIA.
