Hanukkah is around the corner (for all of you that don't know). I see Chow has posted some off-beat Sufganiyot (Hanukkah donut) recipes.
I have a craving for some Sufganiyot but I don't see myself busting out a candy thermometer and a vat of bubbling hot oil. And, I have a few holiday parties coming up, so it'd be nice to bring a dozen or two.
I had them for the first time a year ago and they just tasted like a delicious jelly donut, only maybe the shape was less disk-like (like my local donut shop) and more puff ball. I was told they were on the pricey side too (1-2 bucks a piece), but I couldn't figure out why (unless they were Kosher).
1. Where do you get your Sufganiyot?
2. Do you know of any places that serve more of an avante garde Sufganiyot? Say, a Scoops-interesting-ice-cream-flavor Sufganiyot place?
3. More of a general chow topic, but can anyone tell me the difference between a sufganiyot and a good ol' deep fried jelly donut? (Is it a dough difference?)
Oh, and while I'd prefer South Bay recommendations, I figure there won't be any... so, any places on the Westside would be great. Lastly, if the sufganiyot you're thinking about is in the SFV and they are to die for, please let me know too.
