A stunning meal, by surprise - Saigon City, Springfield

Saigon City Restaurant - 6333 Brandon Avenue, Springfield

I had heard, when it opened some years ago, that it was average-to-good. I had not been there before.

Lunch with my wife - she got grilled chicken, I got Banh Cuon (rice crepes with ground pork and mushroom inside)

Mine came out WAY later than hers, but we decided not to fuss. We were rewarded ...

Her chicken was apparently the same farm-raised free-range cage-free chicken that you can also buy raw to take home there, and it was moist and tender and flavorful - plenty of chicken, huge scoop of rice, crispy fresh vegetables on the side.

Mine obviously took a lot of last-minute prep - I have NEVER had freshly-prepared banh cuon before, and these were perfect! Unlike the ones you get pre-packaged around here, at stores at Eden Center (and I love those banh cuon), these showed the bubbly marks of fresh making. $7.95 got a huge portion of the crepes, each folded around a scattering of ground pork, along with fresh veg (mostly sprouts and pickled carrot/daikon), 5 or 6 thich slices of bologna-like pate, and a heap of cubes of fried tofu, a huge meal for the price, fresh and utterly yummy.
