If my memory serves me right, the last time I ate at a Japanese AYCE restaurant, hair was still growing out of the top of my head! Ha!
A few weeks ago, I found myself tagging along with my in-laws to 'Spoon and Fork plus' for an AYCE Japanese/Thai family dinner. The reasons for this choice were to do with flexibility and size of our party.
Anyways, to cut a story short, I was surprised by the quality and artful presentation of some of the dishes.( see photos ). Fish used for the Sashimi platter were as fresh as some of those offered by non-AYCE outfits. Tempura, though not as delicate as I normally like due to slightly overly thick batter, was more than passable. A Lobster Bisque was unexpectedly full of lobster and shellfish aroma and tasted quite delicious. Beef tataki was well seasoned and tasty. Lastly, effort by the kitchen staff in going out of the way to decorate the desserts must be a first amongst AYCE places?!
Of course, in a place like this one cannot expect perfection. For every ups there were also some downers. Biggest disappointment belonged to a few cooked dishes. Amongst which, the dull looking, tough and overcooked Teriyaki steaks deserved a special mention. Now I know what it means when people use 'tough as cardboard' to describe their steaks!
I wonder how other AYCE fare when compare to Spoon and Fork? However, curiosity is one thing, wasting my time and money in doing comparison is another!
