self-stuffing thai fish dish

Has anyone ever had the thai dish where you start with cold water, some sort of hollow stem (lotus?) cut a couple inches long, and lots of tiny, tiny fish, whom, as the water heats up, seek shelter from the warming water by stuffing themselves into the hollow stems, so by the time it gets to a simmer the stems are packed with all the little fish, thus "self stuffing". Is it lotus stalk, or something else, and does any type of tiny fish work?
