For years I've taken note of the sign at Pinocchio's Pizza #2 offering calzone and stromboli when I've detoured around traffic congestion on Hwy 101 and always wondered what it might be like.
Yesterday I made it happen, dropping by after an afternoon shopping at the outlet center.
I was encouraged by the mouthwatering scent of yeasty dough baking, garlicky goodness and tomato sauce hanging hot and heavy in the air that hit me when I walked in.
Pinocchio's is now limited to offering to-go only because it does not have a wheelchair-accessible restroom.
I had not called in my order in advance. But I did not mind waiting inside as it gave me enough time to admire the collection of vintage Pinocchio figurines.
Stromboli, $11, is filled with mozzarella, salami, Canadian bacon, Italian sausage, and mustard rolled up in pizza dough. Red sauce for dipping comes on the side. For all those cured meats, the overall impression is not so salty with the mustard being the seasoning highlight. With the gooey melted cheese, this made me think of a hot ham and cheese pinwheel encased in chewy bread. It held up for the near hour-drive home. Still warm, a few minutes in the toaster oven revived the crispness of the crust. Big enough to be dinner for two people, we agreed that we would get this again.
Prices seemed quite reasonable. Slices and Sicilian pizza are available at Pinocchio's as well.
