Stroganoff - Home Cooking Dish Of The Month, November 2016

meatn3 | Nov 2, 201611:12 AM     156

Our winning dish for November 2016 is Stroganoff!

This dish is usually associated with beef but other variations are welcome. Do you add mushrooms? Mustard as found in older recipes or tomato paste as found in more modern versions? Serve with potato straws or over noodles?

The history of this dish is interesting. Many theories point to a French Chef employed by the Stroganoff family of Russia creating a fusion dish incorporating elements from both countries.

A Stroganoff recipe first appeared in print in Russia in 1871. The first English printed recipe is in 1932. Stroganoff became wildly popular in the U.S.A. in the 1950's-60's. This popularity spun off many variations including "time saver" recipes produced and promoted by food companies. Recipes incorporating ground beef and condensed soups date from this period.
