Order a burger at a tequila bar, why?
Well, seven years ago, the original Don Pistos opened in North Beach. The hamburguesa served me in the first week was magical. https://www.chowhound.com/post/additi...
So when I passed by the newish Marina offshoot, I wondered if this one could be as good. Unlike the one in North Beach, this does not have bacon and onions ground together with the beef. While the place was filling up on a busy weekend night, some seats were still open at the window counter and lounge tables in front, so I decided to satisfy my curiosity.
First, the complimentary chips and salsa verde. Both as good as I remember. The salsa's so bright and fresh with a solid heat punch of Serranos.
Street Stand Burger, $11, described on the menu as kobe beef, jack cheese, lettuce,
tomato, onion, avocado. I was a little worried because my server did not ask, and I did not state, how I wanted it cooked.
Not to worry, this turned out to be pink and a nice medium rare. An even more impressive feat when you realize that this burger's constructed of TWO thinnish patties! Both of them were well-browned with all the charred flavors that brings. The meat was so juicy and rich. Each patty was topped with a slice of melted jack. The Acme hamburger bun was the right size in proportion to the meat and beautifully toasted and buttered. No mayo, mustard or ketchup on this baby, and it did not need 'em. This is another terrific burger from Don Pistos that aces out many around town that cost considerably more.
Service was friendly and attentive, especially considering how packed the place was. A great addition to the neighborhood.
