Street restaurant (longish)

Hi all,

I've been reading the boards for quite a while, gathering ideas and your excellent feedback, but have not really started posting yet. After a tasty dinner at Street last night (about which I haven't seen much here...though maybe threads were woven before I began reading), I decided to post my thoughts--be gentle, I'm a newbie :)

Just last week, my boyfriend and I were lamenting the lack of tasty, eclectic, but unpretentious and reasonably-priced haunts in SF. You know--the Luna Park variety. Well, after trying Street (at 2141 Polk St.), I can safely say I've found another one to add to my small list...though prices are a bit higher than LP, it's got an interesting, varied menu, an appealing wine and cocktail list, and a hip vibe that's not so strong it creates interference with your meal (a problem, I found at the nearby Spoon).

The menu features about 7 appetizers and salads, which last night including a shrimp chowder that tempted me and several green salads, fried calamari, and a goat cheese souffle (if I remember correctly). I began with a fairly generous spinach salad with a light vinaigrette and sugared walnuts, mandarin oranges, and pomegranite seeds (a nice break from the ubiquitous spinach/feta/onion salad).

For my entree I debated at length, finally settling on a hearty mushroom risotto with edamame and garlic. Yum!! It was hearty without being dense or gummy, flavorful and satisfying--the perfect dish for a cold January night. I loved the addition of the edamame--an interesting twist and it was nice to add some crunch to the moist risotto. My friend had seared ahi with green beans and mashed potatos--there were several other fish entrees to choose from, as well as what looked like a tasty burger--you could choose what toppings to add a la carte. Although we didn't order dessert, there were about 6 options, each of which sounded good if not unusual(bread pudding, apple tart, etc).

The room is long and narrow, as seems to be true of several of the restaurants along that strip of Polk, but there is definitely more elbow room here than at Spoon, where you're basically sitting *at* your neighbor's table. Red walls and little blue lamps dangling over the bar add to the trendy factor, which appeals to me, but some might find irritating. Our service was prompt and friendly--overall, a good experience, and definitely a place I'll go back when I find myself in that neck of the woods. I just wish the prices were a bit closer to Luna Park's--on average, they seem to be about $5-7 higher per entree (ie, most are between $15-20).
