the berries are coming, the berries are coming....!
a sponge cake is the usual - any favorite recipes for "yummy things to be drown" in fresh strawberries?
Served on spongecake??? Them's fighting words. The meaning of "shortcake" is a biscuit-like pastry. That's not to say that some folks don't use sponge cake as the base, but it's debatable to suggest that it's the "usual" way the dish is served.
Edited to add: here is my favorite recipe from Genius Kitchen, https://www.geniuskitchen.com/recipe/.... These shortcakes are huge. I often make 6, rather than 4 from this recipe.
I have a "drop biscuit" recipe that is quite similar - add sugar and it makes a nice go with berries.
just thought there might be other ideas/thoughts...I'm going to experiment with a (thickish) sweet crepe thing this year.
Not to be a stickler but, although that sounds like a great strawberry dessert, it's not a "shortcake."
BTW, there have been many prior CH threads on Strawberry Shortcake that you may want to consult, including:

I have to agree. Been going through a recent love affair with Paula Deen's Butter biscuits.

Had several biscuits left over from Easter dinner that I popped in the freezer. Just tonight I was lusting after strawberries to pair with them. Soon!
am not much of a shortcake fan and prefer pound cake or angel food for this sort of thing.
also lady fingers or amaretti cookies set up with whipping cream as a faux-trifle.
Do you mean biscuits?? I normally use a buttermilk recipe, and add vanilla and a touch of sugar.
as is evidenced in the thread . . . there are regional and personal differences. I've always found that eating the differences is the most pleasant way to make them disappear.
just looking for other ideas . . .
On the history and meaning of "shortcake," not to be confused with sponge cake: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct...
A little bit of rhubarb sauce adds a nice tart contrast to the sweetness. A spoonful or so on top of the cake item and then strawberries
No specific recipe to give, I always freestyle my rhubarb sauce as my plants just keep on growing- I keep getting good stalks into August
Try a vanilla bean pound cake instead...or make it really interesting by adding fresh finely chopped herbs like thyme, rosemary, basil or mint. To make it extra juicy, spread homemade strawberry jam or drizzle strawberry sauce on the cake before laying with sliced berries,
This my absolute favorite - a browned butter cake. http://www.ezrapoundcake.com/archives...
I usually use more strawberries and reduce the orange zest (or leave it out entirely). I do sometimes add a squeeze of lemon to the strawberries.
The "party biscuits" I made for 2016 DOTM immediately came to mind. Even though I've not made them since, I sincerely intend to this season. Here's the link to the paraphrased 3-ingredient recipe. https://www.chowhound.com/post/scones...
I'm looking forward to homemade strawberry ice cream!
