Went down to Davenport (near Santa Cruz) this weekend to pick strawberries at Swanton Berry Farms. I've always enjoyed their organic, union-picked strawberries at the farmers' market, and now I know why. Their berries grow on coastal bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, with a better view than most $250-a-night bed and breakfasts. And the taste--the berries were Chandlers, sweet and packed with real strawberry flavor, perfumed with that warm, heaven-sent strawberry scent. We went with a 6 yr old, who had a great time and turned out to be an ace picker (helps to be already so close to the ground!) Now I'm firing up my big copper jam pot and getting ready to make a big batch of strawberry jam. Happy summer!
U-Pick is available for the next 2 Sundays (June 2, 9) from 9am-1pm. The farm's about an hour and a half to 2 hours south of SF. We picked a flat (12 pint boxes) in no time. Flats are $15 (as opposed to $22 at the farm stand, and probably a lot more at the farmers' market).
