Straus Family Raspberries and Cream

Melanie Wong | May 1, 200503:03 PM

Shopping in Big John’s market in Healdsburg on Friday afternoon, I picked up a pint of Straus Family ice cream on special for $3.49. Though the organic super premium ice creams have been on the market for two years, I just got around to trying one.

Six ingredients go into the Raspberries and Cream: organic cream, organic nonfat milk, organic evaporated cane juice, organic raspberry puree, organic egg yolk, and organic vanilla extract. Firm and densely solid with little air or overfill, the ice cream melts away to nothingness without leaving a plasticky film in the mouth. With a judicious hand with sugar, the flavors are delicate and the natural tartness of the raspberries zings in the finish. The taste and texture are very close to homemade.
