Strange Shanghai Tofu

My wife and I just got back from China and we had a lot of great food, but one dish that we particularly enjoyed was this tofu dish that we had in Shanghai.

The tofu was a very dark coarse type that looked like cubes of pumpernickel bread and it was served in a sweet/savory sauce that was fantastic. We had it in one restaurant where it was described as "Tofu in delicious sauce" and then I had it again on the street.

I also saw the tofu for sale on the street in large dark brown loaves. I love tofu and have traveled all over Asia and have never seen this before.

Can anyone shed any light on what it is and what it's called for me?
