I was really slack about not posting this several weeks ago when I had Sunday brunch at Stone Soup, but...better late than never, I hope.
We bit off more than we could chew twice that day. The first time, in choosing our bike route...from FENCE to Columbus to the Green River and up to Saluda and back down Howard Gap, through Tryon and back to FENCE...we were looking at 5 minutes to closing time by the time we got back to the car, and 3 minutes after 2:00 when we hit the door of Stone Soup, red-faced and sweaty.
Although the "kitchen was closed" we were kindly offered a chance at the brunch buffet. It means a lot to me when a restaurant is willing to be a bit flexible when you get there late...many places will frown at you at 15 minutes BEFORE they close.
The buffet, although obviously a little picked over, was very, very good. It's been 3-4 weeks ago, but as I recall:
Yellow grits w/ fresh corn
Ham in Maple Glaze
Homemade apple sauce
Seared tuna on green salad
Melon,proscuitto, and figs
Tons of pastries
and they made fresh coffee just for me
Everything was outstanding, I would have been happy to have any of it come out of my own kitchen. There were quite a few other things, but my memory is getting hazy. They offered the buffet to one more late-comer, but she declined...I think the sight of myself and husband shoveling food onto our plates all glassy-eyed may have detered her. We obliterated the ham.
And that was the second time we bit off more than we could chew...we both ate way too much and were unable to eat dinner that night. I'm headed there for another post-ride feast this Sunday, so I suggest you get there early and try to eat before we clean up!
Stone Soup is on Hwy 14, a mile or so toward Landrum from I-26. I *think* the Sunday Brunch hours were 11-2, and I *think* they serve dinner Thur-Sat, but I'm not sure...you should call.
