We had a good time and an enjoyable dinner at Cafe Stella in Silverlake last night. This is the Moulin Rouge of neighborhood French bistros with tiny orange lights strung over the patio, faded French posters on the walls and Dido vying with the lastest Buddah Bar cut on the sound system.
Started with a nice apple, Bleu Cheese, walnut salad and a Goat's cheese salad with pear, both in a good tart vinaigrette. Both $10. Then we each had the Steak au Poivre with a decent NY steak and a great peppercorn sauce. Entrees come with your choice of two sides: French fries, Haricot Vert, au gratin potatoes, or ratatouille. Both $26. The desserts were okay with the creme brulee edging out the profiteroles. (Does anybody in this city make a great creme brulee anymore? I mean, I like pastry cream as much as the next guy but it belongs in pastry! Where's Gerri Gilliland when you need her?)
Finally, with four glasses of wine, latte, and a large Pellingrino the bill came to $130. Not cheap but worthwile.
