I discovered McCann's steel-cut oats early this winter and became hooked. After reading here that steel-cut can be bought for so much less money at the health food store and that some posters couldn't tell the difference, I decided to give it a try and do a taste test. The bulk oats certainly were a lot less expensive; about one third the price. But after a side-by-side taste test this morning (I had time to kill)I'm not at all sure they're worth it.
The bulk oats were mushier than the McCann's, much less chewy and I thought less interesting texturally. And they didn't have the nutty aroma or flavor that McCann's does. One third the price is certainly compelling, but until I find some that are both less expensive and equal in quality to the McCann's, I think I'll stick with the high-priced, and to my mind definitely superior, product.
