While American per capita consumption remains relatively low, the large population means the US remains a HUGE market. That said, there is conflicting information here. According to the linked article, "Wine is now becoming part and parcel of America's culture, with over 7,700 wineries across the country, in all of the 50 states."

Yet, according to a webpage from the Wine Institute -- -- which was last updated on May 7, 2013, there were 8,806 wineries in the United States as of 2012. Of those, 3,754 were located in California . . .
