It's not even like I had high (or any) expectation for this. And I was craving some tea latte kind of thing and Starbucks was right there, and I haven't been there in a long time, so I thought maybe I'll try something new....
It was really bad. First of all it wasn't even from tea leaf or tea dust, but some kind of powdered substance that has the split pea soup color. I knew I was in trouble when I saw that. And then it doesn't even taste remotely like green tea, just a weird chemical taste that's a bit drying and hard to describe.
Avoid at all cost.
I haven't tried that, looks too weird and scary to me. The chai lattes aren't bad next time you are craving tea at Starbucks.
I agree. I actually tasted a sample of the green tea frappucino thing they were marketing last summer. I thought it might be safe. Disgusting!!! Didn't bother with any other weird concotion they included green tea in.
The powdered substance you are speaking of is called matcha -- REAL green tea, the kind they use in Japanese tea ceremonies.
Unfortunately, Starbucks's matcha is premixed with sugar. There is more sugar in the mix than matcha. Which is sad. Then they add melon syrup, which really isn't necessary.
So yeah, their green tea latte is gross. But don't knock the matcha.
Where did you get the info that their matcha is mixed with sugar?
I doubt they use matcha. It is way too expensive. Their powder is probably something totally artificial.
I used to work at starbucks and it is macha and it does have mixed in sugar too.
they actually do use real matcha. I get extra everytime. and I found out that is real by doing an interview with some of the actual business associates
With 55grams of sugar in the grande size there's a whole lot more sugar than matcha involved
http://www.starbucks.com/menu/drinks/...
It actually is matcha-- just matcha mixed with way more sugar than anyone should consume.
And then they add syrup to the mix. Ugh!

Right off the package of Starbucks Matcha product.
I drink it with non-fat milk sugar free vanilla (no melon) and it's only 120 calories. It's healthier than mochas with coffee, whip topping, sugar syrups that is ick! Green tea lattes are so good and it's an acquired taste....If you are use to coffe tasting things with tones of garbage then the green tea isn't for you.
I didn't say matcha tea is bad, but rather, the starbucks version is awful.
I've had matcha flavored tea in other places, and some of them I liked.
But Starbucks definitely put too much sugar and other things in their version.
The Chinese supermarkets sell better tasting instant packages...I think Mr. Brown or something is the name?
Anyways, you shouldn't make a broad generalizations like the last statement when you clearly misinterpreted the initial post.
"First of all it wasn't even from tea leaf or tea dust, but some kind of powdered substance that has the split pea soup color. I knew I was in trouble when I saw that."
You must understand that because of this quote here, people are under the impression you have no clue what matcha is... I don't think it's people misinterpreting your initial post, when you don't use the word matcha at all but rather call it a "powdered substance".
I had one this past summer & I almost vomited. I'm not a picky eater, but this was plain ol gross. I guess it serves me right for ordering an expensive bastardized version of green tea.
its pretty gross. i love green tea and i love starbucks, but that drink was nasty. However, i do love the green tea frappucino!
I like Macha lattes, but when you order it from Starbucks, you have to stress NO added sugar! That with low fat milk is ok. If you ge it with soy milk, then it is too sweet.
you mean no melon syrup?
yup, I get mine half sweet, and with nonfat milk and it's good
There's no way you can have the matcha latte with no added sugar-- there's sugar in the matcha powder mix that they use. They'll warn you about not adding melon syrup to the thing as well.
They really ought to warn people ABOUT adding melon syrup to it.
I prefer the green tea drinks from Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, if you've got that chain in your locale.
Yes, their green tea lattes and frappucinos are really, really gross. The matcha they use is sub-par and much too sweet. I prefer traditional, non-bastardized matcha.
I love Starbucks greentea latte. I've been to Japan were I had my first real green tea. (matcha) It's a taste you have to learn to like it. Starbucks did al real great job with their green tea latte. It taste the same as the green tea latte in Japan. I had some (well a lot) puffs in Japan with a green tea creamy filling, the same taste as the green tea latte from starbucks.
I enjoy green tea lattes, but definitely NOT Starbucks green tea lattes. I currently reside in Japan and their Starbucks green tea latte is no match when it comes to Starbucks green tea in the U.S. So it does not taste the same. Japan has no melon taste what so ever.
you and I are some of the only people on this website who actually like it. it is very delicious
i love the green tea latte! i get it with soy and half the amount of melon. it's only good iced though...
Clearly even among those of us who like the green tea latte, there are a dozen ways to make it. I love the green tea latte and even know how to make it at home, from ordering it at Starbucks enough times and paying attention. I don't think their matcha green tea has sugar added to the powder mix, because the powder is so fine and you would be able to see sugar in it (and it would be a lighter green). If you think it is bitter, you might be at a Starbucks that does not put the melon in unless you ask for it (we have one of those Starbucks locations, I don't usually go to that one). If you get soy milk, they use vanilla soy milk, which adds more sweetening. If you don't like it sweet, ask for no melon and don't get soy. Personally, I love it with melon and the vanilla soy milk, and that's how I make it at home almost every morning. I even have a little handheld milk aerator that makes it foamy. Cheers!
i like it with melon and the vanilla soy as well. where did you find the melon syrup and matcha to make it at home? i can't seem to find either... i have some matcha from trader joes but when i got it home i realized it was mixed with other stuff.
I'm currently experimenting with making the green tea latte at home as I find there is no consistency at the stores - either too sweet, not hot enough, or not enough matcha and after paying $4 each time, it gets to be a bit frustrating. The last time I went, the guy was trying to put whip cream in it. I've never had any one do that before! I like the starbucks green tea latte but with half the syrup (2 pumps) and with an extra scoop of matcha in a grande and even with these instructions they sometimes double the syrup instead of halving it! I bought some of the melon syrup to make at home but it still tastes too bitter so I am guessing they must put sugar in their matcha powder or my melon syrup is fake. They could always grind up the sugar to a fine powder as well so you may not be able to tell... Anyways... still in the experimentation process of getting it exactly the way I like it... getting closer every day!
I recently found my love for the starbucks green tea latte, including the melon syrup. Now that Starbucks has discontinued this flavor syrup I am having a difficult time finding it. Do you know where I can purchase the melon and also straight matcha powder? I found Matcha tea bags at henry's but the consistancy is too gritty! Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
I'm not sure where to tell you to go, but I do know that the matcha powder at starbucks is mixed with sugar so it will be difficult to duplicate the exact consistancy and taste even if you do find the matcha powder. All I know is I'm so sad about the discontinuation of the melon. Please call or write to starbucks to tell them you want it back! If enough people complain, maybe they will bring it back!
Try to buy a bottle of the syrup at one of the stores. I know we still have a few and since we aren't using it anymore we would be happy to sell it off. All the stores are able to sell the syrup bottles to the public. There is a "sku" and a barcode on each bottle. Good luck!
yeah i've thought of that, but then i will have to carry it around with me everywhere. i will feel kinda silly. haha. how much are they btw? :)
about $6. you might also be able to do it from Starbucks.com
we have a customer that purchased a number of bottles of orange syrup when it was being discontinued and does come into the store with it for us to use in her drinks. You could always put just a little in a cup that you bring from home, then you would get the added bonus of .10 off your drink each time.
I actually didn't think the Green Tea Frappucino at Starbuck's was half-bad. I'm no green tea aficionado, however.
The last time I saw a full cup of that green tea latte was when it left my friend's hand as it dropped into the trash. The Frappucino's is okay, but I think it's mostly the ice and sugar that makes it good on a warm day. I think it's better to stick to real green tea - china green tips or the zen.
go to lollicup.com to look for the nearest location near you, it's a chinese chain store, they serve over 50 drinkes and snacks, the ice coffee and tea is great, go and try it, you will not regreat
I think everything at Starbucks is overly sweet. I think they're spread too thin and quality is going down...I remember it being alot better.
Heard from a friend that the Green tea Frappucinos at the Tokyo Starbucks was really good. I think they over-sweeten for the american market?
I didn't mind Starbucks Green Tea Latte (half-sweet, non-fat) until I tried Second Cups' version. Much better. Also, half sweet and non-fat. It's not as sweet and it's creamier despite being non-fat. I don't put milk in my tea, but this is a different thing altogether IMO and it tastes good.
never heard of second cup... where is it at?
Oh, sorry, abbefaith, it's a Canadian chain. There are a lot of them here in Toronto. Almost as many Starbucks.
I tried one of those this past summer. It was terrible. I haven;t met anyone who liked it. I really have to wonder sometimes how they handle their product tasting panels during the R&A phase of new product development. They are a big company, they must have some procedure beyond, "gee, this sounds like a cool idea, let's try it" and rolling out ectoplasm green slurry topped with blackberry goo to stores nationwide. Nasty. There have been several concoctions lately have have gotten a big eyebrow raise from me.
I almost tried the green tea latte last time I was at starbucks, but chickened out. The last time I decided to get something different I got a chai latte and didn't love it so have since just been sticking with what I know I like. I don't go to starbucks often and am too cheap to risk $5 on something new I may or may not love. I will probably be ordering my tall nonfat sugar free vanilla latte with a packet of equal and dash of cinnamon until the day I . . . well, stop going to Starbucks.
i really like the green tea latte.....make with skim and if possible sugar free syrup - no whip...and i really like the starbucks version, the one with the melon. i don't care for frappuccino anything, way too rich. I love the chai lattes too. I have had the Second Cup green tea latte but the vanilla syrup or whatever they use, just doesn't do it for me. I like matcha everything....in green tea ice cream...you name it. super hard to find where i live. Plus i love the freaky green color !!!!
Someone gave me real matcha for x-mas....yay !!!!!
p.s. i hear the earl grey latte is also very good....it's called..London Fog or something along those lines??
Hey guys, let's go to Starbucks for a healthy drink. Maybe order a Tazo Chai Latte with Soy Milk. Sounds so healthy lets get a venti. Now let's take a look at what people have put in their bodies:
Calories 290
Fat Calories 30
Sugars (g) 52
Slap hand against forehead - "I could have had a Milky Way"
Calories 224
Total Fat 8.2g
Sugars 30 g
Back to a large plain coffee with skim milk for jfood with a milky way on the side..
You have no IDEA and really should ask. The green pea substance is called matcha and is a super potent powder form made from the tips of green tea. It probably doesn't taste like green tea to you because it's not your typical low budget green tea. I LOVE starbucks green tea latte, made with matcha, and ask them to omit the melon syrup. You are in for a treat becauase this green tea is PACKED with antioxidants, will speed up your metabolism, and gives you a caffinated boost. Do not avoid, ENJOY! p.s., I also purchase matcha green tea from muzitea.com
i'm beginning to notice i, like you , am in the minority for being fans of this stuff.... I don't live near a starbucks and i have to have one of these things anytime i'm anywhere near one, so it IS a treat to me (sorry jfood, you can have your milky way). Nearly had my luggage go to the lost and found recently, waiting in line for one recently at the airport.
i get the sugar free vanilla syrup lately, but i like my tea sweet (unlike my coffee).
Based on the price of this stuff...it HAS to be packed with something !!
I LOVE Starbucks' Green Tea Lattes. I'm really surprised to hear so many people can't stand them. However, I didn't know they included melon syrup in the lattes - now I know why one Starbucks once asked me if I wanted it unsweetened. I was surprised and said that I of course didn't want it sweetened. I didn't realize that I had been served sweetened versions of it before. I couldn't really taste the difference, though. To me, Starbucks versions (sweet or unsweet) taste basically the same as any green tea latte, hot or cold, or smoothie that I get at the Matsuwa Marketplace (Japanese superstore) in Chicago. I would prefer to make it at home and save myself some money, so if anyone has any tips on what brand Matcha to buy or a specific way to mix it I would appreciate it. From now on, I'll ask for my Starbucks version without syrup, but as long as they use the powder (and not the Tazo liquid concentrate) I think it tastes great.
I love Starbucks Green Tea Latte too. But it IS an acquired taste. Anyone that says that adding milk to green tea doesn't realize the difference between a leaf brew and matcha. Anyways, you can get what is called "Ingredient Grade" or "Restaurant Matcha" online. It isn't the high quality matcha used in tea ceremonies. Rather it's a matcha that has a stronger flavor used in green tea ice cream, lattes, and the like. Plus, it's only about $30 per pound (compared to $30 per 20g for the high grade stuff).
You can make a much healthier, better tasting version at home. It aint cheap, but it's cheaper. Whole Foods sells green tea matcha -- Maeda-en is the brand I buy. $15 for 1 oz. You can also buy your unsweetened, un-vanilla'd soy milk there. That's all you need. I have a small aerator (similar to an immersion blender but much smaller and with a whipping circular coil) Heat the soy milk (or not) and whip in the matcha. You can add a packet of splenda if you need some sweeetness, as the matcha is pure.
the green tea latte looks like green diarrhea in a cup and one time friend let me try his iced green tea latte and that was the best green diarrhea in a cup i had ever tasted.
did you get it hot or on ice the hot one tastes awful, and another thing there is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYY too much ice in them i could drink a tall which costs $3.00 in 5 seconds.
I was in the mood for something new and different at the 'Buck a few months ago, and this green sludge nastiness was recommended to me by the cashier. Bad idea. I almost upchucked at the second sip. The cashier took pity and gave me a frap instead. Unoriginal but tasty.
Wow, wow, wow. I just went to the Starbucks website and a Venti Green Tea Latte with soy milk has 460 calories. With 2% milk, it is 450 calories. With nonfat milk, it's 370 calories. I think I would rather have dessert.
By the way, I am still confused if the calories and sugar in the Green Tea Latte are coming from the tea mix or the syrup or both. The website does not shed light on this. I asked at Starbucks today which tea lattes I could have without sugar and I was told all of them except the Chai Latte, which already has sugar in the mix. I don't know whether or not that information was accurate.
I ended up ordering a black tea latte, without syrup. It still tasted sickenly sweet - I made the mistake of ordering it with soy milk and they must use one of those sweet tasting soy milks. Oh well, at least according to the website, a Vente Black Tea Latte with soy milk is only 260 calories versus the 460 for the Green Tea Latte (and hopefully my Black Tea Latte was even less than the 260 calories shown on the Starbucks website, since I omitted the syrup).
I think Starbucks is running out of ideas.
Starbucks is for sure running out of ideas, especially if they have to put melon syrup in their green tea lattes. It should be called a melon latte instead. It defeats the purpose of real green tea. So not worth $4. Gag.
I'm so disappointed, thought I was doing a GOOD thing by not having a coffee drink, and getting a 'healthy' green tea latte, instead. I'm not supposed to have lots of sugar, and am also dieting, and what met my lips was the most sickening sweet, sugary drink, I've had in a long time! I also thought it had a slight fishy overtone! I got it hot, with milk. I thought I might like it, maybe 2/3's less sweet, but now you guys say the sugar's right inthe mix? And then they add MORE with the syrup?? I don't get it, most everyone is trying to be healthier and eat less sugar, so why are they killing us with it, I wonder? I might try it once, without the syrup, and see how that goes...maybe..
I assume that Starbucks does taste tests before introducing a product and that they make their drinks sickingly sweet because their research shows that is what the majority of people prefer.
I think if they had to post calorie counts prominently right in the store most people wouldn't order this stuff (because honestly, for close to 500 calories, who wouldn't rather have a dessert instead of a Starbucks drink), and Starbucks would be forced to come up with healthier alternatives.
I don't know if anyone said this already but the blended Matcha drink at Peet's is really good- I get it with soy milk and it's not too sweet.
Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I just tried this as well, and possibly a little horrified that I liked it! :)
I cut caffiene out and asked the girl for low sugar, less caffienne alternatives.
I got a non-fat green tea.
While still buzzing hours later, I find out it's matcha tea, which has something to the effect of five times a normal cup of green tea, so I'm not quite sure how true it was that it was a "low sugar" drink. But it did taste sweet.
However, I'm curious...did anyone else feel...buzzed from drinking this tea? Possibly from the large amounts of sugar and caff? I honestly felt a little high. Is that Matcha?
I agree, the Green Tea Latte is horrible.
I'd hazard a guess that many of the people who dislike this, have never had matcha either.
Huh? I drink matcha at home all the time. Matcha is bitter, which is why most Americans hate it. Starbucks' green tea latte is sugary (which is why it is so high in calories) and most decidedly wouldn't appeal to anyone who loves real matcha.
I don't drink coffee, so I try to stay out of Starbucks since their tea is poor. However, I was forced to go to a Starbucks the other day and I must say that if you have to go there and you don't drink coffee, the rooibos latte is tolerable. Unlike the green tea and the chai, it isn't made from a sugary base and you can get it without the sweet syrup.
P.S. I just went to the website where Starbucks sells it products and it list the ingredients for the green tea latte as: "An infusion of (water, matcha and other green teas), organic cane sugar, honeydew juice concentrate, natural fruit flavors, gum, Arabic, xanthan gum, guar gum and citric acid." Ick, ick, ick. So wonder it tastes so bad and is so high in calories.
I have seen the Tazo tetra packs that have those ingredients, and i've also had the green tea lattes without the syrup, and it is very much like the matcha I have at home. The ingredients you list appear to come from the honeydew syrup, which I don't get in mine. At least in the place i frequent, they use the powder, not the tazo sweetened tetra packs, which the chai also comes in.
I was referring to this comment from the OP , along with similar comments i've seen: that it wasn't tea, but "some kind of powdered substance that has the split pea soup color" ...... anyone familiar with matcha would know what that is.
As I understand it, the powder that they use at Starbucks for the green tea lattes is pre-sweetened and then they add even more sugar with the syrup. That is the only way to explain the caloric content listed at Starbuck's website. A Venti with soy milk has 460 calories and with nonfat milk it's 370 calories. Since tea has no calories, there is no way to account for that calorie content without significant amounts of added sugar.
i like it i dont get the whole blackberry crap or whatever everyone is talking about i get the iced or hot green tea latte with soymilk and 2 extra scoops of macha
i think its great i like sweet stuff and i am a lover of tazo teas so when i tried it i loved it i dont know about other people but i love it
The Matcha powder Starbucks uses is pre-loaded w/ sugar. If you like the regular drink you will like it w/out extra syrup, its plenty sweet enough. Try it yourself- order it w/ skim and NO sweetner, you will be suprised that it is plenty sweet and better for you. There's no reason to get something that you think is healthy and then load it w/ SUGAR and FAT! Try it!!!
I love this drink first of all you need to indicate to them that you want no syrup it's too sugary if you add the syrup which is basically sugar. You ask for the soy milk and just the matcha powder. That's the bitter taste that you were tasting which is very healthy for you. Look up green tea matcha powder and look at the benefits. If you want a healthy drink get this drink.
I've tried green tea latte's everywhere and my favorite is Williams Coffee Pub. I can't drink Starbucks or Second Cup's versions anymore after a Williams..
First of all, really good green tea is NOT compatible with milk and is best without any dairy products. Second, Starbucks has this tendency to turn everything into a dessert. As a purveyor of green tea in this form, they are doomed.
I am Japanese and love Starbucks' green tea latte (not liquid Tazo's one, but matcha powder one). Starbucks did a test marketing in Japan at first: they have an excellent marketing strategy, for Japanese people DO drink a matcha milk (we call it for a drink of green powder tea mixed with milk and sugar) but none of chain cafe served it. It was a huge hit. People here in this thread seem very confused with a regular green tea vs. a powder green tea. Also I don't like Tazo. It doesn't taste 'matcha' at all for me. Matcha is traditionally used for Japanese tea ceremony, but widely used for sweets and at home. When we grew up, we use matcha with milk and sugar. Don't misunderstand that Japanese people don't drink a regular green tea with sugar and milk! Starbucks was so wise to establish a green tea latte targeting Japanese consumers. I wrote a letter to them if they can bring that green tea latte to the US market. Now I am so happy with this product ... except the level of sweetness, but hey, this is not only at Starbucks. It is nation-wide issue! When I order a green tea latte (matcha powder, not Tazo liquid green tea) I always ask for half-sweetner and extra powder. This portion is perfect and authentic 'matcha milk' :) Thank you Starbucks! My Japanese friends and I cannot live without this drink! By the way, does anyone know which matcha manufacturer does Starbucks use? The quality is not too bad for matcha milk. Indeed matcha is pricey in Japan, but it's really depending on the tea grade. The newer tea leaves are the more expensive. Also it's depending on which area tea leaves are from. Since Starbucks provide a very affordable price green tea latte, I assume they use matcha made in China. Oh, noooo. A food safety is uncertain.
I like chai tea lattes (I make my own) and I tried a grean tea frap from Starbucks but I was nervous about the bright green color...it just didn't seem right.
This summer my 9 year old went to camp at the Japanese House and we had a tea tasting - with matcha green tea - when I saw the powder and they explained the process, I realized that we Americans have limited knowledge about what green tea really is.
My husband purchased a can of matcha from Teavana and it is pretty good...I came online today because I was in the mood for a matcha latte and wanted to know how to make one...I guess i'll google matcha milk.
From a Starbucks Employee,
serving size 1 tbs
25 calories
5 grams sugar
6 grams carbs
0 protein
2 tbs are used in a tall green tea latte
In Japan you find matcha green tea and it's usually a powder so japanese people sometimes expect to have green tea powder.
I love the matcha frappucino that you find in Starbucks in Japan though I don't know if the taste is the same in the US
I love the green tea latte's hot or cold...I will say this is an acquired taste... I skip the syrups. Melon sounds awful.. with green tea and milk... now that is gross..... anyway... I have to watch blood sugars... I know that there are about 15 carbs from the milk (skim) alone, depending on the size of the drink... so they are adding sugar.. Just today I ordered an iced green tea latte w/o syrup ...and it was extremely sweet... it caused a horrendous spike in my blood sugar... I could taste it..and boy was I right.. however last week I ordered one and it was fine... so beware.. if you need to watch sugar.... this drink is inconsistent... I will be ordering sugarfree matcha online from now on...... :)
I order the Green Tea Lattes almost every day.
I always order it without the 'classic syrup - aka sweetener'.
You can order it with the default 2% milk, or if you like it even less sweet skim milk.
Or if you like it a tad sweeter - whole milk - still no classic.
It is absolutely awesome. I love this drink and this is the only thing i ever order at Starbucks:) I even started buying my matcha to make the same latte at home. Matcha is great for you and it is supposed to look exactly the way you described it. I highly recommend to anybody looking for the one semi-healthy thing at Starbucks;) Some people just do not like the taste of grass/green. If you are one of these, sure you will never like it - this doesn't mean that you should avoid this product. Give it a try and do not blindly believe reviews. Btw, the latte might be a little bit too sweet but the taste of the matcha green tea is absolutely real - know this for a fact since I have been buying organic Matcha on regular basis and the taste is very similar.
Not sure how you consider something with between 26 grams of sugar and 72 grams of sugar (depending what size you order) to be "healthy", but to each her own.
I actually said "semi" healthy comparing the tea to everything else Starbucks has which is just pure sugar and nothing else. Sugar is actually not bad as long as you don't have it in everything and as long as you actually burn all the energy it gives you. Im165 cm and 56 kg. Have my delish Starbucks green tea every morning and am absolutely healthy. This all because rather than calculating grams of sugar and calories every day, I just do my exercise and walk a lot. You are right everyone has a different opinion about healthy and unhealthy. You don't have to agree with mine. Usually forums are to provide different points of view and that's what I did. You don't really have to be "sure" about my opinion. Have wonderful evening/day and live a life with no sugar if that makes you happy.
I wonder if it can really even be considered semi-healthy, though... fairly recent research has shown that the health benefits of black tea are obliterated with the addition of milk and sugar (which is customary among some tea-drinking cultures), so perhaps the same goes for green tea. Oh well. I pretty much eat/drink anything for taste in the first place.
I think it's just you because I perfer this drink over any other drink. I love this taste and there are many drinks you just have to try to like and many you aren't going to like that other people like(:
you must have not had it sweetened. that is my all time favorite thing to get there. many people, like you and I, have very different tastes buds but you should not make negative comments about it. instead you should say unusual taste. so readers are not fully aware that it may be good to them. or it would be completely gross to them.
I like the idea of drinking green tea in exchange of coffee, green is good for your eyesight but after reading these comments, the sugar content the Matcha has is contradicting my idea of Goodness, I thought Matcha tea has a natural sweetness, now I know from reading comments here, Thanks everybody,
Really gross. Tasted like goat milk with a green spice. I almost died from taking a sip. Never again. -Alberto
It’s called Matcha. It is in fact a real type of green tea. And it’s a very common tea in Japan. Matcha is very different from regular green tea, it has a more earthy, vegetal taste so that’s why some may not like it too much. As far as I know the latte has no chemicals in it. I believe it is just matcha tea, milk or cream, and a bit of sugar.
