I went to Star India yesterday for the first time. I understand that it is fairly new, and that their dinner menu is incredibly extensive. When I arrived, I was a little creeped out because the place was pretty much empty except for one Chinese guy. They had a sign in the window for Barefoot wine, and not much decor. So of course I'm thinking, "This is going to be highly Americanized slop". Boy, was I wrong. Everything was very flavorful, with the proper amount of spices. I do wish that some of the dishes had more chilis in them, but they were decently hot. They were daring enough to put out a goat curry, which incredibly hearty, flavorful and excellent. Dal Maharani was one of the best I've ever had. I was not a huge fan of the mint chutney, but the tamarind was great. And the chai, while needing a bit more spice in my humble opinion, actually tasted like tea for a change, That's something I find to be a rare concept for some reason. A full 1/3 of the buffet table was empty, but I assume that's because they didn't expect a lot of customers that day. Shame, because I would have loved to try some more offerings. The samosas weren't my favorite, but pakoras were good. Everything being served was Northern style food (my understanding is that the chef and owner are from Punjab) and everything tasted the way I imagine it would've in India (I'll find out in August). My understanding is that they serve some Southern food for dinner as well though. I heartily recommend this place to anyone.
