By Saturday afternoon the entire neighborhood of Park Slope was plastered with menus for Star of India, the new Indian restaurant on 5th ave. bet Carroll and President). My girlfriend, her mother, and I, decided to give it a try. The food was pretty good (my girlfriend and I shared a vegetarian dinner for two) and her mother had chicken kebab. All in all, a fine palatable experience. The food is on par with Joy on Flatbush avenue, as the two decent Indian restaurants in the neighborhood (I can't stand Amin and I refuse to acknowledge the existence of India House).
But the real story of the night was the service. I have to say that it was hands down the worst service I've had in several years at any restauant. The wait staff was completely unorganized, in part because so many people placed delivery orders (due to the menu plastering) in part probably due to bad staff management. It seemed as if their were 5 different waiters all trying to do the same thing for us (yet none of them actually doing it). Over the course of a 5-minute period, usually 3 seperate people would ask us if we recieved our food yet, our drinks yet, our appetizers yet, or whatever. Each time we responded "no, not yet" the waiter (whoever he or she happened to be at that moment) seemed genuinely surprised and concerned, appologized profusely, hurried back to the kitchen, only to never be seen at our table again until 5 minutes later when they returned to ask the same question again and begin the process anew. Eventually (probably by accident) the food we ordered arrived, but the whole experience was a complete disaster. There was at least a half-hour wait between our appetizers, our drinks, and our main course. The whole meal took about two-hours.
The place seriously needs to get their act in order, because the food was good, and the neighborhood could sure use a good Indian restaurant like Star of India. I recommend waiting at least two weeks before you try it, though.
