All Star Donuts--El Cerrito

kfk | Jul 18, 2005 01:27 PM

Since there's been talk of donuts, I wanted to give a positive recommendation for All Star Donuts located in the El Cerrito Plaza. B hits this place with the twinpups several times a week on their stroller walks. The owners are very friendly, and I love that people actually eat in there. There's a regular group of retirees, plus families with kids, and teens from the high schools (pre and post game). The donuts are FRESH and large. His favorite, the glazed old fashioned has a delicious lemony tang and the perfect amount of fried crispiness. I do my best to NOT eat donuts but have tasted the glazed twist (huge, fluffy and sweet), and the pastry-based cinnamon-raisin rolls and almond bear claws (both have a nice pastry, not too sweet dough, and lots of glaze). I mostly limit myself to a couple glazed donut holes (perfect mouthfuls of sweet fried). Accidentally, B ordered me a donut "bear claw" which is yeast, glazed, and filled with apple. It was very fresh, very sweet, and 2 bites were enough for me. But I'm a wimp. I do not recommend the scones, they are sweetened bisquick-like and glazed with random "fruity" flavors.
